Acupuncture & Moxibustion
A special focus area
- Acupuncture & Moxibustion constitute an essential component
of Oriental Traditional Medicine. It probably originated in ancient
China but information regarding Indian ancestry is appearing in
the literature.
- Anyway it has flourished through the ages absorbing the essence
of different socio-cultural values. It is basically a drugless
therapy and is presently being practiced all over the world in
the treatment of various acute and chronic illnesses.
- Central to the concept behind acupuncture is the idea of body
as self healing and that as living beings we are all naturally
full of vitality & are continually and quite unconsciously
rebalanced & regenerated from within.
- Acupuncture sees the body as a self-rectifying whole, a network
of interrelating and interacting energies. Their even distribution
& flow maintain health, but any interruption, depletion or
stagnation leads to disease.
- Chinese themselves called this vital energy as 'Qi', which flows
through meridians. By needling or pressing acupuncture points
as well as by adding Moxibustion to the points or tender area
'Qi' can be influenced & various Common diseases can be treated.
- The practice of Acupuncture & Moxibustion is growing very
fast and the World Health Organization has advocated for proper
development and standardization of acupuncture techniques, appliances
and personnel training programmes for the proper advancement of
this therapy.
- In India, the practice of this therapy was introduced in the
late fifties by Dr. Bejoy Kr. Basu. But in comparison to other
countries, its development is lagging behind in our country due
to various reasons.
- In this context, IRIIM is dedicated to play a crucial role by
organizing proper training, research and treatment, programmes
as per WHO guidelines.
- IRIIM is also in the forefront of the movement to obtain proper
recognition, development, standardization and propagation of Acupuncture
in India as a System of therapy.
